Fire in Paris' 11th arrondissement claims three lives
Blaze breaks out in residential building on Rue de Charonne
Investigators probing cause of fire
A fire in an 11th arrondissement apartment building has claimed the lives of three people. The fire broke out in a seventh-floor apartment on Rue de Charonne at around 9.30am on Sunday, April 7. Firefighters from the Paris Fire Brigade were quickly on the scene and brought the blaze under control, but the three victims were pronounced dead at the scene.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation. It is thought to have started in a malfunctioning electrical appliance, but this has yet to be confirmed. The building has been evacuated and the residents have been rehoused.
The fire is the latest in a series of deadly blazes in Paris in recent years. In 2017, a fire at a residential building in the 6th arrondissement killed 13 people. In 2019, a fire at a nursing home in the 17th arrondissement killed 10 people.
The Paris Fire Brigade is urging people to be vigilant about fire safety. They recommend that people install smoke alarms in their homes and businesses, and that they have a fire escape plan in place.
