Biden: Israel Proposes Gaza Ceasefire, Calls for End to Conflict
President Outlines Three-Part Plan
President Joe Biden has welcomed a new Israeli proposal to end the conflict in Gaza, calling it a "time for this war to end." The proposal includes a three-part plan that would ultimately lead to a permanent ceasefire.
Biden's Call for an End to Violence
Biden made the announcement on Friday after arriving in Israel for a four-day visit. He said that the United States supports Israel's right to defend itself, but that he believes "it is time for this war to end." He called on all parties to the conflict to "take steps to de-escalate violence and protect civilians."
Israel's Proposed Plan
According to Biden, Israel's proposed plan includes three main elements:
- An immediate ceasefire
- The withdrawal of Hamas fighters from the Israeli border
- The establishment of a new international force to help maintain security in Gaza
Biden said that the United States is "ready to work with Israel, the Palestinians, and our regional partners to support this plan." He also said that he would be sending Secretary of State Antony Blinken to the region next week to "help facilitate the implementation of this proposal."
Biden's Pro-Israel Stance
Biden has long been a supporter of Israel. He has said that his "pro-Israel world view" was shaped by his father, who insisted that there was "no more important relationship" than the one between the United States and Israel.
Biden's visit to Israel is his first since becoming president. He is expected to meet with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and other Israeli officials during his trip.
